SOP for Ph.D. in Management

TxqJu

I am an engineer by profession, but an artist by passion. I like to think differently, innovate artistically, beautify processes and improve people’s lives. Show business has always fascinated me, for this very reason, I have been working with a Mumbai based theatre group called “Banjara” as their financial advisor. My primary responsibilities at Banjara included gathering & distributing funds. I have also worked with directors, producers and designers to convey cohesive vision of Banjara’s productions. During my tenure at Banjara, I gained both valuable insight and had hands on experience with the workings of the entertainment industry. I gained sufficient practical experience in stage management, marketing and publicity for theatres, venue design and planning, financing, preproduction and facility management.

Simultaneously, I have been working for Polaris Financial Technology Limited as a consultant since July, 2011. My job responsibilities at Polaris included optimizing “Business Process Management” product for Barclays and Llyods Banking Group. Altogether this has been a resourceful experience for me since I multitasked and learned various techniques and technologies used in business process optimization.

The Ph.D. Program at MIT Sloan would provide the kind of exposure needed to broaden my thinking and undo my insular prejudices that might be still prevalent in me. In an institution of such confluence of people from every culture, nationality, religion and ideology, I am sure that exposure to these kinds of diverse influences would aid in the overall development of my personality. I also believe that I have a better chance of updating and scaling up my knowledge through this program. I hope to gain solid training in conducting critical research, build teaching experiences, and develop presentation skills. The versatility of courses in this program amazes me, and fosters my keenness in joining this program. I believe that this program along with my determination, hard work, perseverance and dedication will help overcome all hurdles in my future endeavors.

I'm particularly interested in the application of contemporary management science and technology in media and entertainment (M&E) industry. Aspects of management related to entrepreneurship, strategy and innovation shall be within the scope of the research, which I want to pursue. My intention is to develop and apply models and concepts, so as to illuminate and eradicate management issues and challenges facing M&E. To achieve my goal I need to acquire strategic, entrepreneurial as well as scientific research skills. I believe that the PhD program in Technological Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Strategic Management at your university would best suit my needs, primarily because of the interdisciplinary nature of the program.

Although I cannot prematurely predict the course this research might take, however, I expect that it will unleash the hidden potential of the M&E industry. This research could either enter into an entrepreneurial or a sociological precinct, nevertheless I anticipate that it will serve the public interest. Moreover, I expect that the research will address the following subjects and issues. First is the predominant issue of political and external influence on M&E. Though not willing to evade those controversial questions linked to such a remark, I hope to offer as a scientist, an unbiased portrayal of how modern media is largely controlled by powerful people or vice-versa.

In addition, as a researcher, I wish to understand and illuminate the dramatic transformation taking place throughout the M&E industry due to rapid change in technology, what famous economist, Joseph Schrumpeter, defined as “creative destruction”. Traditional business models have been turned upside down or, in some cases, simply ceased to exist. Therefore, it is imperative to find out, which segments of the M&E industry are profoundly suffering from technology disruption and why?

Last but not the least, by means of this research I intend to reinvent the live entertainment industry, for symbolic exchange of thoughts between the medium and the viewer only occurs when the medium is real.

My objectives are to:

 Acquaint myself with various research methodologies.

 Study the M&E industry in detail and comprehend the issues facing the industry.

 Conceive new technologies in order to revolutionize the world of entertainment.

 Develop new business models to manage operations efficiently, and also lay foundations for innovation and growth.

 Establish new models by integrating liberal arts, technology and management principles.

 Identify new revenue streams.

The research at your institution will definitely influence growth in both the creative and cultural industries. The result would be, a population assigning greater importance to the free time they have and a consequential willingness to spend more of their income on the 'experience' economy. Bold as it may seem, but when we are bold we can venture into unexplored territories and conjure miraculous deeds. I believe that when the destination is challenging, the journey would be absolutely epic. For example, Robert Goddard’s revolutionary idea of building liquid-fuelled rockets was rejected and mocked by his peers, who thought that the idea was outrageous and impossible. However, the fact is, that Goddard believed in his idea to such an extent that he could make the impossible possible.

The primary reason for embarking on a Ph.D. program at your institution over traditional MBA, is that institutional management is rooted into analytics and engineering. I have no disdain for these, but meaning is connected to other, more icy territories such as arts, culture and humanities. Moreover, I do not aim to be a trained professional in the field of management. I would rather conceive revolutionary ideas, with the intention of producing new knowledge that is relevant to practice. Besides, my passion is academia and a Ph.D. would really help me pursue such a career in future.

Throughout my career, since the first exam I wrote, I was perceived as an average student. How-ever, my perspective towards my own abilities has been entirely different. I believe that the Indian education system is substandard and inadequate to judge someone’ intelligence and creativity. The reason is, instead of encouraging students to find answers for themselves, the system offers them the solution, and in return expects them to memorize and replicate the solution exactly the way it is. Therefore, I think of it as a creativity killer. Unfortunately, the system dragged me in, and so, I was left with no other option except memorizing the answers that were given to me. I wanted to perform admirably, yet ended up with mediocre grades, because deep down inside I wanted something else. I always wanted, and I still want, to discover the solution on my own. However, what’s done cannot be undone! Therefore, rather than ruminating about the past, I choose to optimistically visualize the future. I have reasons to believe that the education system at MIT, unlike ours, is much more advanced and flexible in terms of research-oriented work.

I aver that I shall utilize every opportunity given to me to the best of my abilities. I will be much obliged if I am admitted into your institution. With the guidance of your eminent Professors, state-of-art infrastructure, intellectual capacity and an amicable environment, I sincerely believe that my objectives will be met to the fullest.

This sample SOP is for applying to a master's program in Computer Science in the USA.

Statement of Purpose - Computer Science

We are currently in the midst of a technological and computing revolution that will drastically change our lives and potentially redefine what it means to be human. I am very excited at the prospect of devoting my long-term career to such a dynamic, fast advancing field. Ever since I was young, I have enjoyed dabbling with computers and experimenting with different applications. Because my own lifetime has essentially coincided with the rise of the modern computing industry, I can sense that there are still tremendous developments to come in this field. It was natural for me to choose Computer Science as my university major, and now, as I near the end of my undergraduate studies, it is my central goal to continue my education in a more competitive, elite, and international environment.

There is only one logical destination for my postgraduate studies: the USA, a country which stands at the center of the computing universe. The US has been the chief driver of innovation in computing, and the most innovative and successful companies in this field are based there. Studying overseas in the US will thus give me not only a greater range of professional skills but also a much broader, more international perspective. Therefore, I am applying to join your MSc  in Computer Science program, commencing in the fall of 2013. I am convinced that I am well prepared for the challenges of studying in your master’s program because of my extensive academic and practical background, which I will describe in detail below.

My academic experience thus far has provided me with a wide range of practical knowledge and skills that will be immensely useful when studying overseas at the graduate level. As a high school student, I excelled in courses related to physics, mathematics, and chemistry. I was fortunate during this time to have teachers who saw my interest in these subjects and encouraged me to continue broadening my scientific understanding and developing my analytical skills. It was due in large part to their guidance and advice that I chose to major in Computer Science in the university. As an undergraduate, I found that I deeply enjoyed learning about programming and systems analysis, and with my strong mathematics background I performed very well in courses concerning calculus, statistics, and differential equations. Now, in addition to my specialized knowledge of computer science, I have an appreciation for the breadth of this field and the nearly endless possibilities for further study.

In addition to the courses that I have taken, I have been very active outside of the classroom, participating in extracurricular activities and pursuing new experiences so as to push myself and broaden my horizons. For example, I took some time to travel across Europe by myself, an experience which, although at times difficult, ultimately made me a much more independent and confident person. I am now comfortable adapting to new situations and interacting with people who are different from me, qualities which will be tremendously useful when studying in the USA. Furthermore, when a my hometown was devastated by a natural disaster, I volunteered to help the victims as an organizer, which involved raising money and providing food, blankets, and other supplies as needed. Aside from the enhanced communication and leadership skills this experience offered me, what I most value is my newfound understanding of the importance of service and helping those in need. Finally, in the university, I was the publisher of the monthly newsletter of my department, a role I took on in order to meet new people and learn a new range of skills. As these experiences show, I am highly motivated and proactive at learning new skills and experiencing new things. This is precisely why I have decided to continue challenging myself by studying for a master’s degree in the USA.

Regarding my goals for the future, I plan to take what I learn in the USA and apply it to the computing industry in my native country. This industry is rapidly growing and shows great potential, yet compared to other, more advanced countries it is still in its relative infancy. By studying in your master’s program and possibly working for a short period in the USA, I expect to have the expertise, the perspective, and the experience necessary to lead our industry to a new era. I also have many friends with similar goals, and I hope that we can one day collaborate to put our country on the map as an innovative force in the computing world.

Sample Statement of Purpose (Bio-Tech)

The enigma of life has always fascinated me. The unabated technological advances in the field of science have opened up growth opportunities in newer dimensions. To shine in the revolutionary workplace of tomorrow, one has to have perfect combination of theory and practical knowledge. Biotechnology is the field of future that is beneficial to the individual as well as the society. I want to be an element of innovation in this field, which is creating a better tomorrow for everyone. To do this, I need to arm myself with requisite knowledge which a graduate program can furnish. I envision your university as the right stepping stone to pursue my dreams and achieve my career goals.

During my undergraduate studies, 'Molecular Biology' and 'Genetics' evoked my keen interest. I found the techniques involved in Molecular Biology including Recombinant Technology fascinating. My aptitude for Mathematics has made me an ardent learner of Chemical Reaction Engineering, Bio process Engineering, Modeling and Simulation. That I am a topper till now in most of the subjects including Molecular Biology, Molecular Immunology, Chemical Reaction Engineering, English, Statistics, Applied Numerical Methods, Biotechnology methods and Advanced Bio techniques is a indication of my enthusiasm and ardor for these subjects.

Confidence in me is one of my biggest strengths, one which I developed when I took many seminars in my class, had to ensure that they were well explored, lucid and crisp, and delivered with confidence in an easily comprehensible language. Other than the theory papers, my undergraduate program had good lab programs which acted as a catalyst to my desire of assimilating to the maximum from the coursework. I have an avid curiosity for delving deep into these subjects and this has motivated me pursue a Master's degree.

I believe that out of class pursuits are as important as core academic excellence, for a holistic educational experience. Going beyond the precincts of the classroom, I have represented my college at ''The Indian Science Congress' held in Kerala, from 3rd to 7th January, 2010. I have also participated in the workshop on 'Food Safety Systems' held on 28th January, 2010 at YYY College, Chennai.

Other than being the topper of my class, graduating as the gold medalist from my college, I have been an active participant in extracurricular activities held in my college and others. From regularly participating in many different dance programs, and other cultural activities, to acting as a member of the Organizing Committee of 'Chrysalis', a National Level Symposium held in my college in 2009. Lastly by planning an industrial visit to Bangalore for my entire department in March 2010, I found that my organizational skills were tested and I came out with flying colors as they were conducted with lan. I distributed the work according to the potential and motivated my team members to give their best. It was a learning experience, and I realized an effective leader is one who can empathize and work shoulder to shoulder with his team members.

To further nourish my research interest, I joined KNISS LABORATORIES, a renowned name in pharmaceutical industry as a summer intern (2009). I worked there in microbiology lab and Quality Control Department. I studied the antimicrobial activities of natural herbal plants like Neem and Tulsi. This industrial experience was enriching, allowed me to view directly all the theory learned in my classes in a practical manner. From the internship, I have gotten a glimpse of the rigorousness of lab work along with the anxiety of anticipation, the pure exhilaration of a positive result. This has further strengthened my dream and desire to be a part of a laboratory where cutting edge research is performed.

My ultimate aim is to utilize the knowledge and training which I receive through my Masters degree to work in the biotech industry where I will look to hone and perfect my practical skills before eventually starting my own Research & Development Company. I hope, in the future, to create an effectual technology which will add value to human life.

To realize these dreams I need to broaden my horizons, receive both training and guidance. I believe that I will receive just this through a graduate degree in Biotechnology in Texas Tech. I feel that the curriculum and lab facilities are designed to allow students to gain good exposure to both the theoretical and practical side of the biotech industry, additionally the core lab facilities in the Centre for Biotechnology and Genomics are highly advanced, will be very useful for an aspiring Bio-technologist.

I sincerely hope that by associating with your University, I will be able to give back in return as much as I will gain in my own knowledge under the tutelage of experts from the industry. I hope that this statement of purpose will merit me a place in your institution.

Statement of Purpose  (SOP) - Architecture

I am motivated to study abroad in order to broaden my international outlook while simultaneoulsy strengthening my professional abilities. I am especially eager to become acquainted with different design styles and techniques. By collaborating with students and instructors from diverse backgrounds, I will be exposed to a wide range of ideas and styles; this, in itself, will be extremely valuable for my future career. Each country has something unique to offer in the field of architecture, and there are diverse styles and characteristics in the buildings, rooms and decorations; from the general appearance to the smallest details, an integrated, international society such as that in your university is ideal for gaining inspiration and acquiring sound training.

I earned my BSc from the Department of Architecture at Good University in [my country]. This course of study gave me a thorough foundation of knowledge in architecture and design. In my free time, I participated in several seminars involving architecture and design, and I attended several supplementary courses to attain certification in various software applications. In addition, I was active in sports in my university, joining the Volleyball Club, Basketball Club, and also the Diving Club, in which I served as a leader and helped to organize activities and recruit new members. This experience in particular allowed me to develop my leadership and interpersonal skills.

In the university, the coursework focused on theoretical aspects rather than practical aspects. Therefore, to gain practical experience, I have been working for Goodwell Design Company since 2006. In this company, I have significantly increased my knowledge of architecture and interior design. As a Designer, I have worked on several cases which have broadened my understanding tremendously. For example, I worked with customers who wanted to renovate their indoor designs, and I consulted with customers and my supervisors regarding various design options that could best meet their needs. One such case involved the design of a local bistro; other, more prominent cases, included my participation in the design of the Best Hotel and the Great Hotel in [my city]. Currently, I am working on the planning of the Goodnest Bay Resort.

Through my work on these projects, I have gained practical experience and abilities that cannot be learned in the classroom, such as the ability to carry out plans, supervise, and oversee the actual construction process. The contrast between my academic training and my work experience helped led me to a new understanding of architecture and design. I learned that many of the theories and ideas that I learned in the university were somewhat impractical. Successful design requires not only good ideas, but also the practicality that allows the design to be ultimately carried out. If a design can be implemented, then this is the mark of a good design, but it is important to have experience with the practical aspects of design in order to understand which designs are effective and which are simply impractical. My work thus far has been rewarding and inspiring, yet it has also allowed me to reflect upon my shortcomings and the areas in which I need to receive additional training. Consequently, I am highly motivated to enter your master’s program and study diligently.

Now that I have a firm understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of architecture and design, I feel that I am prepared to begin the next step of my professional development, which is the pursuit of a master’s degree in Architecture. I feel that it is important to build upon my previous training and education in a stimulating atmosphere full of diverse viewpoints and ideas. Your master’s program is ideal for meeting my educational goals. The diverse and international student body, combined with modern facilities and esteemed professors, can provide me with a cutting-edge education that will prepare me for any challenges I may face in the future.

After graduation, I hope to stay in [country] and find a suitable job that will help integrate me into the design environment of [country]. Such an opportunity will give me a more in-depth understanding of local customs, habits, design characteristics, and architectural styles. This will prepare me for a lifetime of success in the field of architecture. I plan to eventually return to my native country, equipped with the skills, expertise, and experience to be an asset to the domestic architecture industry. Your master’s program is integral to my goals, and I greatly appreciate your consideration of my application.
